Service Description

An Introduction to Woodworking is a 2 day course which covers the fundamentals of working with timber. No prior knowledge is required to get the most out of this course; however, woodworkers with some experience will greatly benefit from many of the theories and practices that will be presented. The course will cover the making process from selecting, ordering, and preparing timber for furniture making—to design principles and surface preparation for finishing. Participants will apply theory to practice using a range of hand tools and machines to construct a small project for education purposes. This course presents a unique opportunity to learn from experienced practicing woodworkers who are passionate about their craft and sharing their knowledge. Our aim is to communicate a selection of essential principles and techniques that will help participants to more confidently design and make in timber. What to bring: Bring a notebook and pen. Wear sturdy, closed toe shoes and avoid loose clothing. Food: Morning tea will be provided at 11:00am each day. Lunch break is from 1-2pm. Lunch is not provided but there are a range of restaurants, cafes and takeaway food businesses in the area. The studio space also has a small kitchenette and dining area. The tutors: Rhys Jones Rhys studied wood furniture at the ANU School of Art in Canberra, and completed a Master of Architecture at the University of Melbourne. He has a passion for sharing his knowledge and discoveries and has extensive experience teaching furniture making and design across multiple woodworking schools and workshops in Australia and overseas.
